How to talk to your parent about moving

The conversation most families dread. Here's how to start it early, what to say when the answer is no, and how to keep your parent in control of the decision.
Start before there's a crisis
The worst time to have this conversation is three days after a fall, in a hospital hallway. Bring it up while nothing is wrong, framed as planning rather than a decision: "If you ever needed more help, what would you want that to look like?"
Write down the answers. When the crisis does come, you are carrying out your parent's plan instead of overriding it.
Lead with their goals, not your worries
"I'm worried you'll fall" invites an argument. "You said you wanted to stay independent as long as possible — this is how people do that" invites agreement.
Name the things they would gain: no more yard work, meals they don't have to cook, people to eat with, transportation so they keep going out.
When the answer is no
Do not push for a yes in one sitting. Ask for one small step instead: tour one community, have lunch there, or try a two-week respite stay.
Bring in a third voice. Parents who dismiss their children will often listen to a doctor, a pastor, or a friend who already made the move.
Keep them in control
Let your parent choose which communities to tour, pick the apartment, and decide what furniture comes. Control over the details is what makes the loss of control over the big decision bearable.
Agree in advance on what a trial period looks like — 60 or 90 days — and what happens if it isn't working.
Common questions
- What if my siblings disagree?
- Get everyone on one call with the same facts before approaching your parent. Split roles: one person researches, one handles finances, one is the primary point of contact for the community.
- Should my parent tour communities with us?
- Almost always yes. Families who tour together report far fewer move-out requests in the first year.
